Sitting On The Moon
When you step into Chronic Brooklyn, the first thing you will pass is our crescent moon bench. It begs you to sit down and take a selfie or pose with a friend. Who could resist the romance of the moon and a time from yesteryear?
Back in the day, say the early 1900s … people used to enjoy the novelty of having their photograph taken while on vacation or at carnivals, state fairs and amusement parks with fun props and backdrops. These picture postcards were not exactly a selfie but a souvenir to take home and relish for years to come. Photographers used a variety of backdrops to lure and attract tourists to sit for a pose but one of the most popular was the crescent moon. Crescent moon backdrops abounded and were easy to create using paper. The resulting photographs were gelatin silver print and gave the illusion that the sitter was suspended on the moon dangling between the stars. Try as we did, we could not find one paper moon image where someone used their hand to create rabbit ears behind an unsuspecting poser! Posing for one’s photo was quite serious business for most.
Chronic Brooklyn’s crescent moon isn’t made of paper but was designed to mimic the original paper moon backdrops used in popular American photography at the turn of the century.
